Government Mule

7 customer reviews

The Government Mule was the workhorse of the US Military for almost 150 years. It moved the army. All the supplies: food, ammunition, weapons, and artillery were dependent on the strength, endurance and dependability of this animal to get from one battlefield to the next. In fact, our ability to wage war rode on the back of a mule.

The Emerson Government Mule fixed blade has many of those same attributes. It is strong, rugged and dependable. Constructed of thick, battle-proven 154CM Steel, nearly .200″ thick. It features a combat-ready, bullnose, spear point blade that is every bit as tough as it looks. The handles are made of black dimpled G-10 that is securely bolted with industrial strength hardware. Best of all, it is an Emerson design with legendary “Emerson Ergonomics” that is everything you've come to expect from Emerson Knives. This knife isn't just a workhorse, it's a Government Mule.

The Government Mule makes for the ultimate outdoorsman's knife. Each comes with a nylon/Kydex sheath that you can strap to a bag or belt with ease.

    Why are they discontinuing this?

Bought this years ago, but it is the ultimate field knife. Has always had great edge retention yet to fail when called upon. My boys can fight over this when i'm gone., along with my other blades and axes.

Outstanding field knife. Bought two, each were a different color scheme. The BT is my favorite. Was impressed with the Spearpoint blade configuration.

I would actually give this knife a 4.5, because of something I'll mention shortly, but I fell in love with this knife the second I put my hands on it. I bought this knife along with the Emerson PUK, and I was heartbroken when I handled the PUK because the handle was just too small for my larger hands. As I opened this, I was terrified it would be too small as well. But no, it is perfect!!

I got the Tanto version which was a collaboration with Emerson and Knight Armaments Industries, which is a company known for making stellar firearms. I looked everywhere for the Government Mule online and it was nowhere to be found. During my search, I found out about this collaboration and checked the KAC website and it was in stock!!

The knife is simply beautiful. It is amazingly well built, light, sturdy, balanced–fit and finish are superb. I would have probably preferred a serrated version because that makes cutting rope and similar things so much easier, but it wasn't available.

Now for the reason I am knocking off half a point–the sheath. The sheath is just fine, but on a $300 knife it is fair to expect more than “just fine.” They fell short on the sheath. While it is well constructed, it is uninspired, plain, and doesn't allow you to carry it in the scout/horizontal position, at least not without tying it to your belt/strap. It does have a small compartment for a fire kit or similar items, but I would have preferred a more robust sheath that matched the awesomeness of this knife. Sadly, I'll have to look elsewhere.

Talk about a beast of a knife. That government mule was like a gorilla ready to be let out of it's cage. The government mule is nimble in the hand. The sheath allows you to carry a small folder in the pouch. I preferred to use a CQC-7 in there. Great knife. The sheath has a kydex insert that can be removed and flipped for left hand carry. Velcro for your belt loop. The nylon is stitched very nicely. Definitely a good choice for a tough fixed blade.

Having had a square tip version of this and carried it in service abroad as well as in our off shore waters for fun. I can wholeheartedly say this is an incredible tool. Perfectly balanced and suitable for terrestrial and aquatic adventure. The latter will take some care but it has never let me down.

I'll try to put this to good use imamtiedely.
