The Market Skinner
The name Market Skinner was the professional name given to the men whose job it was to skin, quarter and preserve the meat being supplied to the large commercial consumers such as the Railroads, cities up and down America’s river ways and across the territories and states of the young American Union.
Professional Hunters called Market Hunters, would supply game to them often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands of animals that needed processing on a weekly basis.
Their job required the tools of both professional skinners and butchers plying their trade from sun up to sun down across the western states as the fledgling nation moved ever westward into new un-hunted territory.
Their main tool above all others was their knife, a knife that could do all the things needed to complete their job, quickly, cleanly and efficiently. I am lucky to have several of those “early” knives in my collection.
The Emerson market Skinner is a modern version of the knives used by those professional game butchers so many years ago. To do their job, the knife had to be strong, tough, easily sharpened and ergonomically designed for hours of laborious chores. The Emerson Market Skinner fulfills all of those roles and more in a design (if they had used folders in those days) that any of those men would have wanted.
For the modern Hunter, from the biggest game down to the smallest quarry, this Emerson hunting knife is one you could confidently use anywhere your hunt takes place.
I’ve been a hunter all my life so I know what a good hunting knife should do. Better yet, I know that those Market Skinners knew way more than me about what their knife should do. And that’s what I used as my model. See for yourself.
KNIFE ANATOMY
BLADE STYLE: Hunter/Skinner
Standoff Spacers have been standard on all Emerson Knife models since 2014. Any knife ordered from our site from that year will receive one of these models.
Lanyard Holes serve one purpose: attaching a paracord lanyard if you choose to get one. We get asked that question quite a lot!
The Thumb Button is there so that you may open the knife single handedly . Specifically with your thumb. Some people are naturals at it and some have to learn. Either way, it's very useful.

Rather beastly perfection, as expected from an Emerson.

Got mine today, my knife dealer bought it directly from the Emerson booth at a knife show!
Wow it's just so cool, absolutely love it! I have one with orange scales and it's built like a tank!
super nice grind, ergos are absolutely spot-on, smooth opening & closing, solid lock-up with a reassuring sound and i love the two-tone finish sw/satin!
Best regards from Switzerland!
By the way: The “Proudly not made in China” sticker made me chuckle!😂

Built like a tank! This is my 12th emerson and I have yet to be let down. It came several weeks early and sharp and perfect centered. Keep up the good work Emerson!

When holding this knife you know you’re holding something serious. Able to handle any duty you throw at it and then some. The blade is elegant yet thick and ready to rock! It is big for an edc but it is a SERIOUS knife that can handle any SERIOUS business. Don’t think twice!

This is the EKI sleeper of the entire line. Might be the best knife you never tried. Frankly, it looks a bit on the plain side but don't let that stop you from checking this one out. With a tall blade, upswept tip and always solid Emerson ergos, the Market Skinner can handle any cutting chore with aplomb. Don't sleep on it.

I have owned many Emerson knives over the years and this one really is the most beautiful Emerson that I have owned.

This thing is awesome. Beefy yet great as an edc. Another classic Emerson design that is as useful as it is beautiful.

I was lucky enough to receive the Market Skinner stonewash version as a Birthday present and man am I in love. The knife has some sweet curves and cuts likes a charm. As someone who always loses stuff, the orange handles really come in handy as well.

My travel knife, used both in the field and as my trusty dinner knife. This is one of the new generation of styles to come out of the legacy of an outstanding designer. The large sweeping blade curve and superior deployment of this knife make it a staple of my edc lineup. Even for us large handed folk. This knife delivers precise control and well balanced heft. Beautiful, graceful function.
