Knife Care & Maintenance

How do I clean my knife?

  • Rinse in fresh, clean water after marine or chemical exposure.
  • Periodically oil the blade and pivot area with a light oil such as WD-40 or AIM Extreme Duty Lubricant.
  • If dirt or sand builds up, the knife can be fully disassembled for cleaning. Place a towel or rag underneath—some cylindrical parts roll away easily.
  • An old toothbrush works well for cleaning handles and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Allow the knife to dry completely before storing.

Sharpening

Can I send my knife in for sharpening?

  • Yes. Emerson Knives offers professional sharpening.
  • Include the completed Warranty & Service Request Form and see “How do I pack my knife to ship it to you safely?” section above for instructions.
  • Do not ship knives with blood—$100 HAZMAT fee applies.

Can I sharpen my knife at home?

  • Yes. Step-by-step instructions are available on our site.
  • Emerson knives are single-edge sharpened, which may seem unusual but is actually simpler than double-edged knives.
  • Please view our sharpening instructions page if you need guidance.

What angle should I use to sharpen my Emerson?

We don’t provide a specific angle. Different models and blade shapes may have slightly different angles—there’s no universal standard.

A simple method: blacken the edge with a marker and remove all black during sharpening to achieve the correct angle.

A word from the owner:
"I frequently get emails and phone calls about using a sharpening tool, fixture, or gadget to sharpen an Emerson knife. The first question that is always asked is this, “What is the angle on the edge of an Emerson Knife?”

Well I’m going to be real frank with you. I don’t know. I think it is somewhere between 25 degrees and 35 degrees.

All of our knives are sharpened by hand and I don’t pay attention to the exact angle. Different models and blade shapes are sharpened slightly different from each other, so there would never be a standard angle for Emerson Knives in any case.

If you are worried about the angle to set your fixture to, just blacken the edge of the knife with some black magic marker and set your fixture to remove the black marker all the way to the edge. You then have the correct angle.

All I know is that when they leave our shop they are sharp, real sharp, and I know that if we can do it, you can too. Just don’t over complicate the process."

— Ernest Emerson

Do you sharpen knives from other companies?

No. Only knives produced directly by Emerson Knives are serviced. We do not service collaborations such as Kershaw, Benchmade, or Pro-Tech, etc.

Knife Materials & Finish

What are the properties of the finish?

  • Stonewash Finish: Durable, low-maintenance surface that hides scratches; polished look develops character over time.
  • Thunderstorm Finish: Dark, corrosion-resistant coating that provides a striking, tactical appearance.
  • Both finishes are applied in-house, ensuring meticulous attention to detail.
  • Warranty does not cover scratches or wear.

Why do some stonewashed blades show rust?

  • 154CM steel is high-carbon tool steel—stain-resistant but not rust-proof.
  • Rust may appear from environmental exposure, acidic or alkaline perspiration, or trapped dust and lint.
  • Everyone’s body chemistry is slightly different; some people’s perspiration is more acidic and can accelerate surface rust.
  • We wipe blades with Sentry Tuf Cloth before assembly, but once exposed to certain conditions, rust may appear.
  • This does not indicate defective steel. Cleaning and oiling maintain performance.

Grind, Edge & Design Philosophy

What grind should I get?

Choice between conventional grind and chisel grind, based on preference and comfort.

Why do you use a chisel grind?

Chisel grind (beveled on one side) increases strength, reduces drag, and is easier to sharpen. Inspired by the properties of a wood chisel—applied to knives, it has almost magical effectiveness.

Why is the chisel on the left/front side?

Signature design. No performance difference; chosen for visual reference.

Can titanium be used for blades?

Titanium is lightweight, nearly unbreakable, corrosion-resistant, and non-magnetic.
Emerson bonds tantalum carbide micro-crystals to the edge for sharpness and durability.

Do you make left-handed models?

Yes, for Commander and CQC-7, black handle only, limited quantities.

Do your knives have pocket clips?

Yes, stainless steel, rear-mounted with clip facing forward for quick deployment.

What size should I order?

  • Women’s and children’s sizes are true-to-size.
  • Men’s sizes: XL Emerson ≈ XL Beefy-T.
  • Shirts are slightly trimmer (athletic fit).
  • Snug fit in a regular shirt? Consider upsizing one size in Emerson.
